Pearls from Sis Yasmin Mogahed (15.4.2013)

Alhamdulillah. Allah has given me the chance to attend Yasmin Mogahed (it’s pronounced as Mojahid not ga) talk at Matrade Jalan Duta Malaysia. Alhamdulillah.

Yesterday talk was on stories of the prophets (May Allah bless all of them) in the Quran. Sis Yasmin keep repeating to us that the stories in the Quran are not just stories. It is a powerful lesson that we should and MUST reflect on, ponder upon and immerse ourselves in it. How many of us really bring to life all of these stories? Or do we just read through it and said, oh this is just another stories of the prophets and we are now living in a different world so there would be no connection or relationship.

Nope.
Totally wrong.

Let me share some of the pearls and wisdoms that Sis Yasmin (barakallahu feeha) has shared with us yesterday.

Regarding on the story of Adam and Iblis, most of us know that Iblis did a sin of refusing to bow to Adam as a respect to him. He disobeyed Allah’s order to him. But do we actually know that Adam alihissalam also disobeyed Allah’s order as not to eat fruits from a particular tree...?

Both of them disobeyed Allah taala.
But one continues to be Iblis. The other one was chosen to be a prophet.

Amazing.

The difference lies in their respond after being disobedience. Adam repented to Allah by saying, “O’ Allah. We have been unjust to ourselves and if you forgive us not and have (not) mercy on us, we shall certainly be of the losers,”.

As for Iblis, he responded by putting the blame on Allah taala. He didn’t take responsibility for his mistakes and shortcomings. Instead he blamed it totally on Allah.

#Lesson learned: As human beings, we tend to make mistakes. We do make mistakes. And the best thing is to repent to Allah taala. Seek for His forgiveness. He is al-tawwab, al-ghafuur, al-rahman, al-rahim and etc.

Sis Yasmin also touched on the story of Prophet Yunos alaihissalam. Yunus did a mistake and ended up in the pitch darkness of the whale’s belly. He was in total darkness! And what did he do at that particular time? Did he try to get out of the whale’s belly by his own effort?

No.

The first and foremost thing he do was to acknowledge his desperate need of Allah taala. He said,

لا اله الا انت سبحانك اني كنت من الظالمين

#Lesson learned: We will not get out of our hardships/calamities until we turn back to Allah taala.

Moving on to the story of Prophet Musa alaihissalam. Whenever something bad is about to happen on our beloved people, what do we do? We cover them, protect them or hide them so that they will be unseen and protected from the harm. But what actually happened to Prophet Musa mother when the incident of Fira’un killing harmless children happened?

Allah ordered her to let go of her son (Nabi Musa). To let it go.

It’s not easy to let go of your most beloved. Not knowing how it will turn out in the end. Plus it’s like placing a baby in front of a hungry lion.

But masya allah. With Allah’s protection, everything turned out to be as what He planned. Nabi Musa was even brought up in Fir’aun’s own house!

#Lesson learned : Learn how to put trust in Allah despite the nearly impossible or certainly impossible situations. See how Allah protected Nabi Musa even when he was in the murderer’s (Fira’un) house. Subhanallah.

Another point on Prophet Musa is his tawakkal on Allah when he was overcome with totally impossible situation ; facing him was the dead sea and behind him are the armies of Fir’aun. He has nowhere to escape or run away from. Totally no way out!

If me, I would be panicking. My mind would be wild with imaginations. I would cry in agony. I would simply burst tears of hopelessness.

But Prophet Musa…masya allah! He said,

قَالَ كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّ مَعِيَ رَبِّي سَيَهْدِينِ

He said, By no means; surely my Lord is with me; He will show me a way out.

#Lesson learned. We should certainly have 100%  tawakkal to Allah. No matter what, when, where and how, we should make this ayat alive in our hearts. Please Allah. Help us!

The next prophet mentioned yesterday in the talk is Prophet Ibrahim alaihissalam. Nabi Ibrahim was thrown into the fire. In the mid-way of being thrown, the angel asked him if he needs any help. Just imagine if was us, we would certainly shrieked; just get me out of here now!

But Nabi Ibrahim, he replied,  اليك فلا اما (if the help is from you, nope). See the degree of tawhid and aqidah of Nabi Ibrahim! Masya Allah. He refused the help of Jibril and solely trusted Allah to save him from the danger.

#Lesson learned: Sometimes peace and serene does not need to be showed. It can be from inner peace such as the case with Nabi Ibrahim. Physically, it looked like the fire has burnt him sore. But on the other side he was been protected, cool and peace. Inner peace is more vital.

So how do we respond today if been tested by emotional, social, financial and etc. of fires?

Actually there’s more to share. But I think I will stop here for us to really digest the sharing and if you feel it has benefited you, do share it with your friends. Let’s us spread the knowledge and may we gain rewards for our efforts, no matter how small it is.

Insha allah J
